This photo from the September 20, 2008 edition of the Las Vegas Review Journal makes a statement on how ‘backwards’ Nevada Job Connect is. Nevada Job Connect is a state-run agency that assists the unemployed in finding work.
Let’s take a deeper dive into this:
- Over 90% of jobseekers start, and prefer to conduct, their job search online
- Looking for jobs on a scrolling sheet of paper does not allow any advanced search capabilities
- The old school ‘bulletin board model’ requires jobseekers to drive across town to search for jobs
Yes, Nevada Job Connect does have an online component. However, it is is powered by America’s Job Exchange which is dominated by staffing agencies and even allows non-Nevada jobs to be posted in Nevada’s Job Bank. Most employers in Nevada are hesitant to post ads on the website because the posting and updating process takes longer than it does to fill the job itself.
With the rising unemployment levels (now at 7.1%), we need a better solution for those looking for a jobs in Nevada.
