There are a lot of ’smart’ people that live in Las Vegas. We also have the opportunity to attract more of these smart people through great programs offered by UNLV. However, if we are not realistic in the pay we offer graduate students, this is not a possibility.
Another article in the Las Vegas Sun titled With that pay, no way, many would-be graduate students tell UNLV, covers the topic that I blogged on back in January. The basis of the article is that graduate students are offered double the amount of supplemental pay in other markets than they are here. So, we miss out on the opportunity to provide them with their doctoral degree.
Back in January, I proposed a win~win situation for UNLV and CCSD. Basically - CCSD needs more smart teachers (and teachers of specific subject matters such as Math & Sciences). UNLV needs to offer more money to grad students, basically with great experience in Math and Sciences. It doesn’t take much to piece together the solution from there.
Here is a snippet of the blog post:
What if K-12 recognized this opportunity and partnered with higher education. Graduate assistants would be required to teach K-12 in the subject of their expertise – dominantly Math & Sciences The graduate assistant would receive their stipend in the form of a reduced salary of a new teacher (new teachers earn $32,000. This would be subsidized by the existing $12K stipend, creating a $12K saving for K-12)
