Recruiting Nevada was covered by KLAS Channel 8 the other day during our Opportunity Boulevard Summer Career Fair 2007 held at the Green Valley Ranch on August 23, 2007.

The topic was the rising unemployment level in Las Vegas and the increased number of jobseekers actively looking for employment.  Although I think a negative spin was put on the subject, it is pretty accurate for Las Vegas standards.  What does that mean?  Las Vegas has been blessed with extremely low unemployment levels over the last two decades.  When others in the country dream of full employment (4.5-5.0%), Las Vegas goes into shock when our unemployment levels reach that high of a level.

Nevada now has a higher unemployment level than the United States.  This does not happen often.  It is simply a bi-product of new residents outpacing job creation.  With the slow down in housing and residential construction, jobs have not been created at the rate they typically are.  However, the amount of people moving here each month has not slowed down.  Las Vegas still averages 5,000-7,000 new residents a month.

The increase in the unemployment level is sure to level off and will eventually go down when the hiring bonanza occurs down on Las Vegas Blvd.  Over the next 5 years more than 167,000 jobs will be created.  I expect unemployment levels to be below 4% within a year and dip as low as 3% by 2010.
